    Public Defender Service for DC - MENTAL HEALTH Division

    We are a small, special division of the Public Defender Service for DC. Our eight staff attorneys are appointed by the court to represent indigent clients facing involuntary civil and/or criminal commitment to the DC Department of Mental Health, as well as insanity acquittees seeking release from their court-ordered commitment. Each semester and summer we utilize a team of undergraduates, graduate students and law students to work as investigative interns, social work interns, and law clerks. These positions are unpaid, but are an invaluable learning experience, and we encourage students to seek university credit.
