    Lyric Opera of Chicago

Lyric Opera of Chicago, one of the country’s most prominent performing arts organizations, has been producing opera since 1954, and has an impressive track record of achieving artistic excellence while also attaining sound financial results. Since 1970, Lyric Opera has maintained on-going relationships with several colleges, universities, and other organizations in and outside of Illinois to provide “hands-on” experience for new arts managers as interns for Lyric Opera, by providing them with exposure to all aspects of business administration for the arts/non-profit sector. In 1995, Lyric began a formal internship program. Interns are selected and assigned responsibilities in the Artistic, Development/Special Events & Fundraising,Technical, Education and Ticket departments, as well as in Ryan Opera Center for American Artists. Responsibilities vary with the time of year and length of the internship. Interns may work full-time (35 hours/wk) or part-time (10+ hours/week). Interns generally work for a full semester (3-4 months), but may work for longer periods of time (shorter assignments may be made at the discretion of the intern supervisor). Internships are open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as individuals between jobs, or looking to obtain experience before entering the workforce or graduate school. Intern candidates are required to have strong organizational, interpersonal, and oral/written communications abilities, as well as practical skills in using word-processing and spreadsheet software programs. Previous experience working in an administrative support role in a business or arts management setting is desirable. Lyric will provide documentation needed to help students obtain academic credit for internship work. Internship positions are unpaid, but do offer a nominal expense allowance for local travel.
