    Equality Advocates Pennsylvania

    Established in 1996, Equality Advocates Pennsylvania is the only organization in Pennsylvania dedicated to achieving equality for LGBT individuals through direct legal services, policy reform and education. Equality Advocates is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. Achievments include: 2006 – Defeated Constitutional Amendment. Led the Value All Families Coalition (VAF) and the Faith Coalition for Pennsylvania Families in the massive grassroots effort that prevented anti-family, anti-LGBT legislators from writing discrimination into our state constitution by banning same-sex marriage and prohibiting recognition of non-marital relationships for LGBT and heterosexual people. 2004 – Saved Domestic Partnership. Served as co-counsel with the City Solicitor’s office and successfully protected Philadelphia’s domestic partnership ordinance, which Equality Advocates helped to pass, from challenge by LGBT opponents. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that the City of Philadelphia has the right to offer benefits to its workers and their domestic partners. 2002 – Expanded LGBT Family Rights. Participated in cases to secure the rights and relationships of same-sex couples and their families. As a result, same-sex second parent adoption is available throughout Pennsylvania, LGBT parents have increased custody and visitation rights, and courts can enforce support for children in LGBT families.
